Pastor José and his wife, Jacoba, serve in their hometown area of Barrio Calvario, Nandaime, Grenada, Nicaragua. Though José grew up in a religious home, he didn't hear the Gospel until age 13 when he heard it on the radio. His family wasn't pleased with his interest in pursuing Christ but he continued to listen to the speakers sharing the Good News. Later, he got a Bible and began to read it with great desire. Finding an evangelical church, he attended a few times and then made a commitment to the Lord. He worked in the church for a few years then went away to seminary in Managua. The civil war in Nicaragua interrupted his studies but he continued persistently, then returned to his home area to begin preaching. He has started two churches and is in the process of planting another one 20 kilometers from his home. The pathways to the new area are tortuous, but he and his family travel there on bicylcles to meet with the people and reach into the community. His current congregation has about 50 adult members and 40 children who are taught by two teachers.

Their home is a two room block structure with dirt floor and sporadic electricity. We stepped over a power line on our way to his home and waded over it on our way out after being introduced to the flashflood producing rains they endure for three to five months out of the year. The families' chickens come in out of the rain and nest under the foot pedal sewing machine. His youngest four children are studying in area schools. Their church pays them about $70 a month and they grow corn and beans to provide some of the food for their family of eight. Tuition for the older children will be about $40 a month within the next year or two
